How to Get Licensed: Follow Step 1 and Step 2 to become certified traditionally through the examination process. If you believe you qualify to become certified via reciprocity skip to Step 3.

 

STEP 1: Choose Your Desired Examination by Reading the Criteria Below:

Electrical Contractor Examination: Any person, firm, or corporation who is engaged in the business of soliciting and installing electrical power or control systems; maintaining, altering, or repairing electrical power or control systems, any electrical wiring devices, equipment or any other electrical apparatus. A person who possesses the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to plan, lay out and supervise the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment for lighting, heating, power, or controls. The term may also be interchanged with “Master Electrician”.

Journeyman Electrician. A person who possesses necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to install electrical wiring, apparatus, equipment, lighting, heating, power or control, covered by this chapter. He or she shall work under a master or state certified electrical contractor, and shall be capable of doing work according to plans and specifications furnished to him or her and in accordance with standard rules and regulations governing such work.

To apply by mail/email download the Application for Examination for the license type of your choice. There will be a 4% service fee if paying by by credit card. No personal or business checks will are accepted. To pay by certified check or money order please make payable to “State of Alabama.” The fee for electrical contractors examination is $165.00 and the fee for journeyman electricians examination is $115.00. To assure consideration of your license application, the Board office must receive all of these items no later than 4:00 PM fourteen days before the next Board’s meeting

STEP 2: Upon Successful Completion of the Examination Determine Your Desired Status From The Criteria Below:

To apply by mail/email, download the EC-1 and EC-2 for Electrical Contractors. Only the EC-1 is required for Journeyman Electricians. Then return them to the Board via email to licensing@aecb.alabama.gov. There will be a 4% service fee if paying by by credit card. No personal or business checks will be accepted. To pay by certified check or money order please make payable to “State of Alabama.” The fee for Electrical Contractor License is $150.00 and the fee for Journeyman Electrician is $35.00.

STEP 3:  Licensure by Reciprocity Only: (Hold a current and valid license in a reciprocating state)

You may apply by reciprocity if you passed an equivalent exam with a score of at least 75%, and hold current and valid license with one of the following reciprocal state Boards: Mississippi State Board of Contractors; Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors; North Carolina Electrical Board; South Carolina Contractor’s Board, Virginia Contractor Licensing Board; Georgia Electrical Contractors Board; or Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors. The Board also accepts the NASCLA Electrical Contractors Exam to qualify for reciprocal licensing.

To submit an application for consideration via reciprocity follow these steps:

Step 1. The applicant must pass the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board Business and Law Exam available at Provexam.com. The Board does not accept applications for this exam and the contractor must provide proof of passing at the time of licensing.

Step 2. Send via Email, US Mail, UPS, or FedEx a completed, signed and notarized Reciprocity Application.

Step 3. Processing fee by certified check, money order or credit card in the amount of $150.00. All fees are non-refundable.

Step 4. A completed Verification of License form from the reciprocal state including date licensed, license status, date of examination, passing score, and disciplinary tatus.

Step 5. FOREIGN CORPORATION (BUSINESS OR NON-PROFIT) APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION (To apply as a foreign corporation please visit the Alabama Secretary of State website by clicking here)

Be advised your application could be delayed if you use a 3rd party licensing organization. The Board cannot discuss your application information with anyone except the applicant. An affidavit from the processor is insufficient to discuss your licensing information.
